The Other Side of Fear
by Karen Fleming

Follow the inspirational journey of one woman’s metamorphosis from disillusionment to renewed purpose. From the profound turning point of a vision quest and through a series of alternative healing practices, Karen Fleming found her true self. Along the way, she encountered a love that reopened her heart and tapped into the Indigenous wisdom of spiritual teachers and guides. Her experience was so life altering, she wrote The Other Side of Fear. This memoir is not only a personal journey of change and spiritual awakening, but a hopeful and motivational treatise for others. Fleming describes sacred ceremonies, gives insights, and shares various traditions and teachings. From rock-bottom hardships and realizations to pivotal and heart-opening moments and anecdotes, this is a story of transformation and overcoming fear. In forging her path to spiritual growth and fulfillment, Fleming also acknowledges those who provided mentorship, positive messages, and a new perspective. These spiritual insights, connections, prayers, and offerings are now passed on this book—with gratitude.

Karen Fleming’s personal transformation is the basis for The Other Side of Fear. By documenting her own spiritual awakening, she hopes to inspire others to find renewed purpose and perspective. It’s never too late; upon completing this book at age fifty-five, Fleming is healthier than she’s ever been—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and continues to practise yoga and mindfulness/meditation as part of her self-care regimen, and attend spiritual gatherings and ceremonies. Fleming is a registered nurse and graduate of the University of Manitoba and served ten years as a Labour Relations Officer for the Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU). Now semi-retired, she continues to provide expertise as a clinical educator for nursing programs at the University of St. Boniface and Red River Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she lives with her two children and three cats. In the summer, she spends as much time as possible at her family cabin in Lac du Bonnet—fishing, swimming, gardening—and on a houseboat with her partner in Lake of the Woods. And when the winter brings cold weather, she retreats to sunny Mexico or other warm destinations.
