Making a Mom
Recipes and Questions for the New Parent
by
J.K Gibson
Being a mother is a whole lotta work! Work that often isn’t recognized; it’s a job from one extreme to the next that can be lonely and feel endless. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In this pithy cook-book style book, I will share my experience of becoming a mother in a series of my own favourite recipes, each followed by a section of questions and lessons to consider. I hope to shine a light for new mothers as I share how being aware of my identity shift, right from the start as a hormone casserole, to actually accepting my new role as a mom has helped me to build awareness and strength as a new parent.
I was born in Calgary, Alberta. Then my parents moved to Winnipeg when I was quite young, and I spent my early school years growing up in the north end of Winnipeg, where I attended school in French immersion. I graduated with a 1st year scholarship having completed the full I.B. program, with a diploma in French literature as well. I began my post secondary studies at the University of Winnipeg and took music courses at the Canadian Mennonite University. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree, I decided to take some time off and pursued my dream of becoming a midwife, which began by working as a doula who taught prenatal classes and attended many births. In the end, I decided to pursue my education degree at the University of Manitoba. After I graduated, I decided to take my first job teaching overseas in China, where I met a wonderful group of friends. There were four of us who spent many fond hours cooking, eating and visiting together. Then in 2010, I returned to Canada and accepted a teaching position in Winnipeg, where I met my husband a year later. We had our first child in 2014, and then our second son in 2016. Our daughter was born in 2018. I continue to work part time, and raise my young family. I love to make time to create and continue to enjoy writing, playing piano and cooking from scratch as often as possible.
