Om Canada
An Intimate Glimpse at Yoga's Firsts
by
Valery Petrich
OM Canada: An Intimate Glimpse at Yoga’s Firsts is a celebration of yoga's history in Canada. Here are profiles of sixty of the country's yoga innovators-the firsts to set up a practice in their area, -start a provincial association, launch a TV show, write a book, build an ashram, open a studio, etc. These are the passionate souls who ushered in the practice of yoga in a post-war era, when contemporaries still perceived them as loners and loons. Scattered across Canada, these yoga pioneers forged their practices for personal healing and spiritual fulfilment based on conviction and despite lasting skepticism. Their efforts ushered in an age of spiritual curiosity that set the stage for yoga and meditation's acceptance as the bona fide spiritual practices and healing modalities we know today.
“This is a phenomenal book of the history of Canadian yoga. OM CANADA by Val Petrich had me be very nostalgic of our history. I loved the photos I would never have thought existed.” —Chip Wilson, Founder of lululemon athletica and author of, “Little Black Stretchy Pants: The Story of lululemon by the founder Chip Wilson”
Valery Petrich is a senior yoga teacher who has taught since 1980. Many of the people she has featured in her book are long-time friends or acquaintances. Petrich lives with her partner, Tom, who is an international consultant and humanitarian, in a postcard-picture fishing village in Richmond, BC, Steveston Village. Her daughter is a yoga teacher and meditator who lives in London, UK. The book is a supplement to the Yoga Studio College of Canada Teacher Training program, which she founded in 1996. Its profusion of data about the roots of yoga in Canada make it a recommended supplement to all yoga teacher training programs across Canada.
