The content in this guide is the result of the author’s experiences as a pastor, naval chaplain, flight instructor, corporate pilot, TQM trainer and mediator.

Charlie Young was ordained a Catholic priest in 1958. He served as a pastor, Director of a Diocesan Office of Religious Education, and during this time was a chaplain in the Naval Reserve. He formed a team which developed and presented seminars on communication skills and the adult learning process. He obtained his Private Pilot’s Certificate to facilitate travel. Charlie also spent 8 months as a pastor in a remote area of Chiapas, Mexico where his flying abilities were called into service. Upon leaving the priesthood and being laicized, Charlie functioned as a single and multi-engine instrument flight instructor with advanced and instrument ground training certificates and an Air Transport Pilot Certificate. When offered, Charlie accepted a position in human resources and safety for an electrical contractor. This led to a sequence of further corporate opportunities and training. Prior to retirement he was the head Total Quality Management trainer for a large electrical contracting company. Since retirement in 1997, Charlie has lived in Bend, OR and has been active as a volunteer in the mediation programs of Deschutes County Circuit Court, Redmond Justice Court and Community Solutions. Presently he assists in the training of mediators, and presents Constructive Communication seminars. Complimentary assistance and additional materials are available for parents and mentors.
