Les Attoquées
An Acadian Story of Two Women Who Lean On Each Other to Survive
by Léonard LeBlanc-Buckles

For decades, Maggie was confined to her childhood home and subject to her abusive brother’s whims. On that rural Cape Breton homestead, stripped of her freedom and her autonomy, she retreated into the only safe place she had left—her mind. When Zabeth, her Acadian sister-in-law, brings Maggie to live with her family in safety, she discovers what it means to share a life with this resilient survivor whose scars, though not visible, will always be evident. Les Attoquées is a touching memoir that celebrates the deep bond these two women formed—steadfast in the face of relentless adversity.

Léonard LeBlanc-Buckles is a community development specialist from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He has worked in the Acadian region of Chéticamp in Nova Scotia, and various places across Canada, and he spent over a decade in Southeast Asia and the Pacific working in sustainable development and humanitarian aid. His Acadian childhood, especially memories of his mother Zabeth and his Aunt Maggie, continues to deeply influence him. He maintains a strong connection to Acadian culture and history. He lives in Montreal with his wife.
