When a Romantic Writes Poetry
by
Ashley Dawn
Poetry has long been used to give tangible form to the most intangible of thoughts and feelings, with the voice of poets speaking universal truths for us all, even when we ourselves do not have the words. And there is no intangibility more universal than romantic love … in all of its stages. This poetry collection examines those stages from the highly personal and relatable perspective of a “late-blooming romantic,” struggling to find real love and healing amidst the minefield of pain, longing, and expectation that all too often defines and constrains our relationships in this modern world. When a Romantic Writes Poetry delves into casual sex, love, loss, healing, and hope in a highly readable and relatable poetic style that will resonate strongly in the hearts and minds of anyone who’s ever ventured into that same minefield … for better or worse.
Although author Ashley Dawn now self-identifies as a “romantic,” she actually spent much of her life focussed solely on her education. It wasn’t until she was in her mid-twenties, with a bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography under her belt, and a full-time position established as an Ultrasound Technologist in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, that she allowed herself to start exploring the unfamiliar world of modern dating, which was wholly outside of her comfort zone. It wasn’t long before she began writing poetry as a way to process those experiences and emotions—good and bad. It has since become one of her favourite pastimes, as well as the most therapeutic, allowing her to express herself in ways she’d never before experienced. By publishing this collection of her poems, Ashley hopes that other people (especially young women) will find comfort in seeing their struggles reflected in someone else’s words and experiences and knowing that they are not alone. When Ashley is not working, dating, or writing, she enjoys hiking, drawing, oil painting, and collecting sea glass along Nova Scotia’s beautiful coasts. “I've always been the type to say what's on my mind, but my pen speaks greater truth than my tongue ever could. That's why I fell in love with the power of poetry.” —Ashley Dawn
