Fieldnotes
in stillness & motion
by Jilly Frances

Earmarking the residue of daily life, Jilly Frances recognizes the ever-changing nature of time and light, as a mirror, as a mother, as a memory, reflecting back to us moments that are both present and fleeting.

“In every discipline, art is fundamentally about paying attention. Jilly’s poetry--like her painting and illustration--proves this essential point: Nothing matters more in art than looking closely, lovingly, clearly at reality--even (and especially) at the mundane--and echoing what's magical." —Shad, Juno-winning rapper and broadcaster Foreword by Tiffany Pratt

Like you, I am many pieces; stillness and motion, introspection and curiosity, in the clouds and on the ground. I find myself earmarking the debris of daily life, recognizing the magic in the unremarkable and letting the residue reveal both the communal and personal nature of our shared human experience. Capturing transience in the form of nuanced portraiture - of skies or ground, of shadows or poetry - I continue to take notes in this way, imbuing ephemera with a sense of permanence. Jilly Frances is a visual artist living, making, and playing in Toronto. Her collections (Skies, Shadows, Ground) are a fluid mirror of existential abstractions, entangling the present with the passing. Jilly’s body of work magnifies the mundane, holds its memory, and reveals the capacity for transcendence within every ordinary thing. Jilly’s creative expressions draw from internal and external landscapes, untamed children, fresh tomatoes, sad songs, and the light of the sun.
