The Recovering Farmer
A Journey through the Labyrinth of Anxiety and Depression
by Gerry Friesen

Gerry Friesen, AKA The Recovering Farmer, chronicles his journey through anxiety, depression, and addiction to a place of improved mental health—and even, sometimes, happiness. Mental health, or lack thereof, has become a major topic in agricultural communities around the world. There is still a strong stigma attached to conversations around mental health, and an attitude that to admit you need help is a shameful thing. This book aims to challenge those attitudes. It explores the aspects of Gerry’s life as a farmer that contributed to his mental health, both positive and negative, and contains concrete tools for others to maintain and build their mental wellness. Surprisingly upbeat and admirably honest, The Recovering Farmer is a memoir, but it is also a powerful recovery tool for those struggling with mental health. It reminds us that it’s okay not to be okay, and that there is no shame in reaching out for help.

"Writing with incredible warmth and wit, Gerry Friesen tells the story about why mental health matters across every industry, age group, background, and lifestyle. Considering my own struggles with mental health, reading Gerry's story and being lucky enough to get to know him fills me with warmth and hope. An exceptional individual spreading a message the world needs to hear now more than ever." —Miranda Leybourne, Journalist "Gerry Friesen stands as a trailblazer in dismantling stigma within the realm of mental health in agriculture. As The Recovering Farmer, he approaches the subject with both passion and curiosity. Through his personal and amusing narrative style, he not only inspires but also instills hope in those who have felt lost and alone on their journey." —Kim Moffat, Counsellor "Stress and mental wellbeing are challenges in Canadian agriculture and stigma remains for many. In The Recovering Farmer, Gerry Friesen delivers an honest and relatable look into his journey with anxiety and depression. His story breaks down his experience with the stigma of mental illness and provides hope for the reader. Thank you, Gerry, for 'talking about it.'" —Dr. Briana Hagen, CEO.
