The Stumpies
by Deborah Duncan and Joyce Evans

Stumpies are small creatures that live in stumps in the forests of British Columbia. Maple, Pinecone, and Poppy are eleven years old and it’s time for them to begin their training to become Travellers! They’ll leave the safety of their families, and follow Aunt Barnacle and the other eleven-year-olds into a life of adventure. The friends learn survival skills and, more importantly, to depend on each other. Follow Maple, Pinecone, and Poppy through a year of adventure, fun, and celebrations with their families and friends in the Stumpy communities.

Deborah Duncan is the author of If You Could Have a Super Power and It’s Time for Tricks! Seven African Tales. She worked as a children’s librarian for thirty-five years, and these days she loves sharing books with her granddaughter. She lives in Langley, British Columbia. Joyce Evans worked as Program Assistant at Coquitlam Public Library for over 20 years. A natural born story teller, she and Deborah created story times for babies and young children, told stories and introduced book to older children, performed puppet shows and had a lot of fun together both at and outside work. They imagined the story of The Stumpies while walking through the woods in Belcarra when Deborah’s children and Joyce’s grandchildren were young. Joyce did the original art work for their story. Her original work was not formatted for publication, so FriesenPress artist Aletha Heyman transformed Joyce’s original work into this book.
