Ari and the Very Loud Bird!
by Tina Capalbo

One noisy bird. One determined kiddo. Unpredictable consequences. Ari is a boisterous, nonbinary kiddo who loves to sleep in. But there’s a problem: one very loud songbird that likes to sit outside their window. When that bird wakes Ari up on Saturday morning, Ari is very annoyed. Then they get busy trying to solve the problem. Ari asks Dad how to get the songbird to stop being so noisy. Then, they come up with a clever idea and get some help from Mom. After all their hard work, Ari is determined to sleep in the next day. But when they attempt to stop the bird, things don’t work out as expected. In fact, things go terribly wrong, and what happens the next morning is very funny! For parents: As a young, nonbinary protagonist, Ari is a kid doing kid things, and their gender is simply identified in the story by their pronouns. It’s accepted as a simple matter of fact, without putting Ari’s gender under scrutiny. Their stable and loving family affirms that Ari is both safe and supported to be expressively and uniquely themselves. This story’s rhyme, meter, humour, and dialogue make it fun to read aloud, particularly at bedtime!

Versatile, curious, and enterprising, Tina Capalbo has worn many hats over the years as a high school English and Drama teacher, social media marketer, communications coordinator, youth theatre co-founder and artistic director, and mom. In addition to lesson plans and stories, she has written everything from corporate architectural proposals to film festival educator packs. Reading nonstop as a child was a welcome escape for Tina. Her love of story craft is anchored in what she has learned from books, writers, and teachers while completing Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees at Western and a Master of Arts degree at Dalhousie. A certified teacher in Nova Scotia and Ontario, Tina has taught in Tokyo, Toronto, London, Halifax, and more recently online. She enjoyed creating the free Teacher’s Guide that accompanies this story. Tina lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where she enjoys a good walk, road trips, shows on stage and screen, intuitive tarot reading, painting, design, and, of course, spending time with the people she loves.
