Sanctuary
by Susan Louise Roberts

Abandoned and lonely, a big old brown dog goes on a quest to find a friend and a safe home. He follows his nose through the wild woods and meadowlands, and meets lots of interesting creatures on his way. But none of them have a safe place for him to stay, and none of them know his name. What will this big old brown dog do? At Ruthie's farmhouse on the Wilderness Sanctuary, there’s a home waiting for him. But will the dog be able to find his way there? And if he does, will Ruthie be able to learn his name? This sweet story teaches children about the power of friendship, and how lonely and abandoned animals can find new homes thanks to the important work of animal rescues and wilderness sanctuaries.

Susan Louise Roberts has a B.A. with Honors in English Literature and a B.Ed. During her lengthy teaching career as a teacher-librarian she sourced and purchased the best children's literature available for large, diversely populated elementary schools. She shared her passion for reading and in particular her love of beautiful picture books and was inspired every time kids responded to well told stories that appealed to their innate sense of fairness, justice, kindness, and love. Roberts served voluntarily on book selection review committees both for her school board as well as for the Ontario Library Association Forest of Reading Program. Roberts recently stayed with the real Ruthie at her Wilderness Sanctuary Bed and Breakfast. After hearing Ruthie’s story of rescuing a dog named Lou (and learning his name), Roberts knew it was a story she had to write. Roberts lives in Mississauga, Ontario, but she and her beloved husband love to spend time at their second home, on the north shore of PEI. Roberts is grateful to have her family’s support as she begins her next life chapter as a new author.
