Companions on a Journey
Walking by Faith, Not by Sight
by Len Mac Lellan

Life takes us down various roads, with many fellow travellers passing us along the way. Some will accompany us on our journey, helping or hindering our progress. At other times, when life seems like a lonely trek, trust that the great Helper has always been by our side, from the moment our journey began. Through eyes of faith, we recognize His presence guiding and protecting us, until our travelling days have slowed to completion. A delightful, relevant, and moving collection of writing, Companions on a Journey pays tribute to the impact of others on our lives and the role we play in blessing the lives of those around us. Grounding his work in faith yet not afraid to wrestle with life’s painful questions, Leonard Mac Lellan has beautifully crafted his reflections and experiences into stories, prose and poetry. Topics ranging from the coronavirus pandemic to his longing for the Maritimes provide interest for readers from all walks of life. Perfect with a cup of tea (or beverage of your choice) on a quiet day, Companions on a Journey will touch the hearts of readers from East to West.

"They say “you can take the boy out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the boy”. How true when it comes to Len MacLellan and his Cape Breton home. But like many a Maritimer, Len left his Cape Breton abode to build his new home in Valleyview, Alberta. While his heart still yearns for Nova Scotia, his present residence (built with the aid of his parents) now holds and protects those he loves so dearly, his wife and children. Life is indeed a journey, and we all need companions as we embark on the pilgrimage from here to eternity. Len’s poems – some with rhyme and other free verse – are enchanting and heartfelt. They are uniquely about his own life, but any of us might find our own experiences reflected in the tales that he relates with easy verse. This book is a veritable pot pourri of poems and prose, ghost stories from back east, and tales of bravery and valour by soldiers fighting on foreign soil. Readers will find themselves amused and intrigued if they read it cover to cover, but inclined to pick it up again and again." Most Rev. Gerard Pettipas, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan 21 March 2021

Len Mac Lellan is a husband to Maureen and a father, teacher, and storyteller. Raised in Judique, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and now raising his own children in Valleyview, Alberta, Mac Lellan has a strong sense of place and community. He takes great joy in his twenty-five years of teaching elementary students at St. Stephen’s Catholic School, which is reflected in his being nominated for the 2006 Excellence in Teaching Award and receiving the Excellence in Catholic Education Award in 2012. When not singing in the church choir or regaling his children – Alexis, Allan, and Anna – with his own stories, he is busy collecting natural and oral history so he can preserve the stories of others. Proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to help pay for St. Rita’s Gathering Centre in Valleyview, Alberta. Leonard is also the author of God Will Provide. This is his second book.
