A young teacher, looking for a two year experience in another country, leaves England in the 1960s and journeys to Western Canada. New arrivals in a country always face unfamiliar circumstances. Some of the early prose passages in this book detail, with humour, those challenges, even for an individual who already speaks English. The author delights in the outdoors and many of the writings tell of the magnificence of nature in Canada, including even the smallest details of creation, which often go unnoticed. Other pieces tell of patterns of life and emotions common to all human beings, whether rich or poor: birth, death, joy, sadness, and sometimes confusion. Delightful watercolour illustrations add interest to many of the pieces chosen for the anthology. This varied collection of prose and poetry gives glimpses of personal and family experiences, and the philosophy of the writer, as she lives through what becomes an adventure of more than fifty years.

Elizabeth Fleet was born in England and embarked on her own adventure to Canada in 1966. What initially was meant to be a two-year sojourn turned into a lifetime adventure. Elizabeth was educated at Cambridge and Bristol Universities in England and worked as a teacher in Prince Rupert, Terrace and Castlegar, British Columbia. She has also served on the boards of Selkirk College, the Open Learning Agency/Knowledge Network of British Columbia and Royal Roads University. Her poetry and prose have been read on CBC Radio, but this is her first published collection. Elizabeth enjoys music, cooking and hiking with her husband and friends in Castlegar, B.C., and she also, more privately, enjoys writing. She notes: “People often sew, knit or garden for satisfaction and for fun. My search for fulfilment and enjoyment has been in creating tapestries and designing flower beds with words!”
