From the Mountain Top
A Novel About One Gaspé Family
by George J. Pappas

Every year, Louise Belmont makes a sentimental pilgrimage to the top of Mont Ste-Anne near her small Québec village of Percé on the Gaspé Peninsula. It’s a special place. It’s where her beloved late husband Luc proposed many years ago. For Louise now though, it’s all about her children, their spouses and her visiting six-year-old grandson Michel. She has no thoughts of romance. So when she meets the distinguished but lost tourist Laurence Bradford on the mountain top, she gives him directions, has a friendly visit and thinks little more of it. But, as she starts to be seen around the village with Laurence, tongues start wagging. Then her old school chum and confidant Harry Bernier returns to Percé for his retirement. Gradually, Louise starts to consider whether to let a new love into her life and just who that might be.

Percé Rock bathed in a golden glow from the setting sun is the perfect time for George J. Pappas to reminisce about the challenges presented by the writing of his latest novel, From the Mountain Top. He admits it’s been quite a year. The characters took on a life of their own, and insisted on being heard. The situations they got into, decisions they made, thoughts they expressed, and lifestyles they chose, came as a bit of a surprise to him. In his youth, some topics were not openly discussed, especially in front of children. Vocabulary was carefully censored so as not to offend. A private life was just that: private. The word ‘sex’, if it was mentioned at all, referred to gender and nothing more. Like the characters in his book, he is undecided at the moment whether to have a hot cup of tea, a dry Martini with a twist of lemon, a Singapore Sling, or simply a cold beer. He is open to suggestions. He’s also beginning to wonder if there is still one more story in him to tell. George J. Pappas is the author of Murder with a Vengeance.
