On the Way to Here
Reflections on Things that Matter
by Phil Small

This book covers a great deal of ground spiritually, philosophically, and emotionally. The subject matter is often weighty, yet it doesn’t feel like that at all, no small feat when discussing the origins and cycles of life, birth and death, and everything in between. Moving from the particular to the universal, to that place where we are all one, the author uses moments from his life experience to help us better understand and appreciate our own journey. Often in an understated manner, he points out that just below the surface of the ordinary lies this other world where the truly meaningful and abiding realities of our lives frequently go unnoticed. He gently turns over the stones on our paths, looking for the meaning hidden underneath, often finding real gems. You will meet yourself more than once in these pages.

"There is so much that is transcendent in [the author's] words... that I felt blessed and privileged to have read them. There were in fact moments when I forgot I was evaluating a manuscript; instead I took the words into my heart and felt that they contained answers to questions I've been carrying around for a long time." –Friesen Press Editor, Rosemary Wilson

At the age of sixteen Phil Small left home, joined the De La Salle Brothers teaching order, and began his long career in education. After a decade in the order's schools in Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City, he married and started a family. With his background in philosophy and theology, he continued to teach Religious Studies and Family Life Education, while living with his wife and other adults in group homes for teenagers during some of those years. His children, in particular one daughter born with significant disabilities, greatly enjoyed community living. In retirement, Phil continues to teach through the wisdom, compassion, and sensitivity of his writing.
