Most individuals who embark on a health care career discover quite early that their working journey is one of responding to others’ needs. No matter what the circumstance or where the location, health care is a global need requiring a response from those prepared to serve others. The Taylors’ health care careers have taken them across Canada and throughout the globe over a period of more than fifty-years. Many of their global deployments have been to isolated settings with low-resources, to disasters, to war zones and to detention centres, where a wide perspective of health care response is required. At different times they have worked with faith-based missions, university programs, professional NGO’s and the Red Cross. Their faith in God and in His love for all humanity, and the confidence that He is always at work for good, has been a significant factor motivating their readiness to respond. Here are highlighted memories and reflections on what they have learned on their journey.

Robert and Suzanne Taylor are retired health care professionals living in Vancouver, Canada. Robert is a Clinical Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Suzanne is a former Adjunct Professor of Nursing at both UBC and Trinity Western University. Their contributions to these universities, as well as standard teaching and mentoring, have included developing academic courses to train young health care professionals for global humanitarian engagement. Their long health care careers, beginning even before their marriage, were equally divided between work in Canada and work globally, the latter which has taken them to more than twenty countries in all six continents, where engagement included clinical service, education, advocacy and infrastructure development. Over the years they have also been involved with Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, particularly in hospitality and outreach to international students. Recognition of their work has included the Paul Harris Fellow award from Rotary International and appointment to the Order of Canada.
