Still Life
and other poems
by
Brian Gold
The poems in this collection explore a life lived at the intersection of family, travel, daily observation, ecology, ageing and professional musings, experienced over seven decades by the writer who was blessed to be born in a country where anything is possible. Oh Canada! One of the poems in this collection (also below), playfully encourages readers to find the poet within themselves. How To Write a Poem It’s all in the way you look at it. It’s not a photograph, it’s not all rhyme, although it might be. Reject more than you retain. Punctuate like a Rothko. Finish before you need to. Sprinkle magic as required. Voilà!
Brian started life as the child of fruit farmers in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. At the age of six the family relocated to Orillia, Ontario. Upon graduation from law school Brian and his wife Susan settled in Ottawa, where they raised a family (Rachel Gold and Cara Gold) and lived fulfilling personal and professional lives. In semi-retirement he started writing poetry at the family lake house near Perth, Ontario. Early in the pandemic, he enrolled in a poetry workshop at Carleton University which led to Brian and two other poets sharing their poetry in regular online meetings. Many of the poems in this collection were first presented in those sessions.
