In the silence I found myself
by
Stephanie Mikki Adams
When I finally sat still long enough to listen, I realized that silence isn’t emptiness; it’s truth. It’s where the spirit breathes, where wounds begin to close, and where the pieces of who we are start to find their way back home. Born in the quiet spaces between grief and healing, chaos and clarity, In the Silence, I Found Myself is a powerfully evocative collection of poetry that gives strong and resonant voice to the lived experiences of Canada’s Inuit and other Indigenous peoples. For generations, they’ve been forced into silence by cruelly indifferent colonizers and the governmental-policy makers who have refused to listen to any voices but their own. But in that silence, there is strength. There is healing. And there is hope.

The youngest of five biological children, and sister to three adopted siblings, Mikki grew up in the beautiful rhythm of a busy home, with four brothers, four sisters, and laughter that still lingers in her heart. Family has always been her compass, guiding her through life’s seasons with love and purpose. She became a mother to three beautiful children: Billie Jo (adopted in 2003), Dione, and Tia, each one a reflection of her heart’s courage, gentleness, and grace. Now, as two of them raise families of their own, she watches with quiet pride as her teachings of love, resilience, and compassion continue to bloom in the next generation, proof that healing and strength begin at home. Mikki’s voice as a writer and leader is deeply rooted in the values that shaped her love, courage, and community. Through her work, she transforms lived experience into words that heal, inspire, and unite. Her poetry and reflections honour the resilience of Inuit women, the wisdom of her ancestors, and the quiet power found in vulnerability. Whether leading her community, guiding her team, or writing from the heart, Mikki continues to walk the path of healing, reminding others that strength is not the absence of struggle but the grace to keep rising … again and again. At the heart of all Mikki does is a devotion to her people and a belief in the healing power of storytelling. As an Inuk leader, she carries her community’s stories forward stories of survival, courage, and love that deserve to be seen and heard. Her words weave together past and present, bridging generations with empathy and truth. Through her leadership and her writing, Mikki reminds us that healing is a collective journey born from connection, guided by purpose, and sustained by hope. Her life’s work continues to echo the simple but profound message that even through pain, we can rise, and through love, we can find our way back home.
