A Métis Man's Stories of Life in Canada's Arctic
by
Alex Gordon
and
Michel Lupien
Alex Gordon left his home in Caslan, Alberta in 1958 for a summer job in Wood Buffalo National Park to earn money for university in the fall. Little did he know this would lead to a 20-year adventure working and living in Canada’s high Arctic. From Inuvik to Iqaluit, and communities and camps in between, Alex shares his stories of friendship and his efforts to be a catalyst for change. This is more than a memoir; it is a love story of Canada’s North and its remarkable and resilient people.
"Alex Gordon and my father were best friends who worked together and spent time hunting and fishing around the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Alex had a natural ability to see what was needed to advance the communities in Canada’s North. It is empowering to know that in the late 1960s and early ‘70s we had a person like Alex Gordon looking out for our best interests.” —Brenda Jancke, Resident, Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq) “Alex’s story is a wonderful collection of leadership themes inclusive of personal experiences within the Norwest Territories during his tenure as a Government of Canada representative. What is so marvellous about this fashionable book are the many shared life experiences in Canada’s North. The various stories of adventure showcase the ingenuity of the people in dealing with a rich variety of challenges and accomplishments. Alex’s memories are so real and wonderfully articulated. Some with humour, others with serious challenges. Many requiring ingenuity, guidance, wit, and unique creativity to display local and territorial leadership. His inclusion of the Gordon family showcases the diversity of rich experiences. The reader can’t help but acknowledge the unique value of northern living for the entire family. Alex’s stories highlight a series of lived of experiences more than 50 years ago. They provide a glimpse of life in the Arctic along with the leadership capacity of the people living there. And, of course, the hidden reason for renewed interest in Canadian sovereignty based on the valuable mineral resources that several countries wish to explore.” —Jerry Heck, Friend and former vice-president, CAREERS: The Next Generation
