In Their Shoes
A Journey of Understanding and Supporting Depression
by Pamela J. Wells

Are you aware of someone who is experiencing depression? If you seek practical advice on how to assist them, insights directly from individuals who have been affected by depression, this book is an excellent resource. If you are currently struggling with depression, I share my personal journey with depression, including my interactions with medical professionals, counsellors, family, and friends, as well as my eventual recovery. This book features interviews with individuals in similar situations who provide insights into their experiences and the strategies that proved effective and ineffective. By reading about their experiences, you may find solace, connection, and the assurance that you are not alone in your struggles.

What others are saying: “Whether you are suffering from depression or know someone who is, reading this book will show how common depression has become. Each person interviewed by the author tells their own story of how they were helped. Reading this book will assist the reader to better recognize and understand people who carry the burden of depression.” “I don’t know how to praise this book without sounding like a paid shrill for the author. (I am not) so I’ll just say it. This book is the best advice you will ever find. The author nailed it. Something I thought not possible. If you seriously want to help someone you will read this in its entirety.” “This needs to be handed out at every therapist’s office!” “I could relate to a lot of the stories and the author‘s notes of help at the end of the book. Even though I am still coming out of a long depression, this book was very encouraging and helpful to me. Because these are true personal testimonies of people’s experiences I found it had a greater impact than other material I’ve read.”

Pam Wells lives with her husband in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Wells has faced a long and challenging battle with clinical depression, enduring multiple hospitalizations, years of therapy, and trying various medications. Despite the care she received, Pam reached a point where she made a serious attempt at suicide—but miraculously, she survived. In the year that followed, she experienced a full recovery. Throughout her journey, her husband, like many caregivers, often felt helpless and unsure of how to support her. To offer guidance to others, Pam interviewed several people she met along the way, including friends, family, and fellow survivors. Their responses, shared anonymously, are included in this book. She wrote this book to help those struggling with depression feel seen and understood, and to provide loved ones with tools to offer meaningful support. Pam’s hope is that readers—whether living with depression or supporting someone through it—find comfort, connection, and the reassurance that they are not alone.
