Mindful Travel Sketching
A Memoir of Journeys Inner and Outer
by
Hiroshi Shimazaki
In this third and final volume of the Mindful Art series, Hiroshi Shimazaki explores what has always been at the heart of his sketching/painting activities, whether for academic research or for pure pleasure. Here he reminisces about times on site and relishes the memories the sketches evoke. As always, he invites readers to enter the world of travel sketching with mindfulness, curiosity, and wonder—as well as, on occasion, a sense of humour. Mindful Travel Sketching: A Memoir of Journeys Inner and Outer contains over three hundred of Shimazaki’s travel sketches from all over the globe, and will appeal to artists, would-be artists, travellers, would-be travellers, and admirers of the artist’s work. Other books in the series are Mindful Landscape Sketching and Mindful Landscape Painting: My Watercolour Journeys.
Hiroshi Shimazaki has practised travel sketching for over sixty years in both his academic and personal pursuits. Professor Emeritus at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, he has been a visiting professor/researcher at academic institutions in Canada, Ecuador, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Mexico. Shimazaki has exhibited his art in twelve countries, given painting workshops at home and abroad, and published nine art books. These include Fukei Henro (Landscape Pilgrimage) (2023); Magome Scenic Sights: Then and Now (2014), with Shuji Ohwaki; and Asian Landscapes (1978). In 1994 he received the Canadian Prime Minister's Award for the Best Book about Canada written in Japanese for Canada no Tochi to Hitobito (Canada, Land and People) (1994). He has published nine academic books in cultural geography and international management and given presentations at academic conferences worldwide on the interface of research and painting. He lives in Halfmoon Bay, BC, with his wife Beverly. www.hiroshishimazaki.com
