The Man in the Truck
by Deborah L. Luton

David Waters was walking home from daycare with Jenny, his three-year-old daughter. Jenny pulls a caterpillar out of the pocket of her jumper. Dropping the caterpillar by accident, she takes a step back and picks it up. Just as she raises it to show her father, she sees a truck jump the curb and hit her father, instantly killing him. She watches as the driver flees the scene. As the crowd gathers, Jenny cries for her father to get up; the caterpillar slips from her hand back to the sidewalk, making its way into the grass. Now, almost two years later, Jenny is almost five years old, and she still remembers the accident. When Jenny and her mother, Nina, go to visit with her grandma and Grampy, several of David and Nina's friends are there to visit with her and Jenny. The man in the truck is among the guests. Jenny sees the man and remembers his face. She turns to get her mother, but she is abducted before she can flee. Detective Fisher Canning and Nina now must try to piece together the few clues they have to find her daughter and the man responsible for her husband's death.
