From Riches to Rags to Riches
The Autobiography of Otto Ladanyi (f.k.a. Neumann)
by
Otto C Ladanyi
This book is dedicated to preserving the story of Hungarian reformed Jews beginning in the 1800s through to the current day, 2024. It describes the unique experiences of the Hungarian Reform Jewish middle class during this period, based on the author’s family history and personal experience. It is written primarily as a recorded history to be consumed by our descendants and may be of interest to those formally or informally reviewing Holocaust literature. It is a record of the experience before, during, and ultimate escape from the Hungarian communist regime and the experience as an immigrant in Canada from 1949 onwards.
Otto C. Ladanyi (Neumann) grew up in Hungary before World War II. He was shipped off to a work camp in Austria during the war. After being liberated at the age of 15 following the war, he returned to Hungary, where he completed his high school education. His life adventure brought him to Canada in 1949. He settled in Montreal and became a Chartered Accountant in 1959. Professionally, he worked his way up to becoming a partner in a Charter Accounting firm and then went into industry practice as a Vice President and Controller. He later became an independent consultant. His real-life accomplishments began once he met and married Hanny Blein, which has been his life’s pride and joy. His legacy is in the family and generations that followed, despite the years of persecution against the Jews and those who wanted to see them eliminated.
