Dundreary's Jam
by
Jill Shakley
Barrymore Dundreary St. John has a low-wage job dismantling old and wrecked motor vehicles for parts. Although not a luxurious job, even for a Londoner during the Great Depression, everything changes when he unexpectedly receives a large sum from his late great-uncle. He happily abandons his squalid life but gets overwhelmed with spending to establish himself in luxury. It's then that Barry St. John meets an eccentric young woman with whom he falls in love, and more troubles of navigating his newly wealthy life come washing ashore . . .
“Jill Shakley” is really a duo: Jill and James Shakley, who have been married since 1969. They have also published other books such as The Bearded Queen (2022), Not Full Circle (2023),and Only the Unexpected (2024). Both growing up in the ’60s, they’re familiar with living in cultural chaos while a war ensues in the background. Jill has an MA with qualifications in the literature of the First World War and its subsequent years; James has a background in military history and is also an artist. They currently live in the Upper Beaches in Toronto, Canada, with their three longhaired cats.
