Against The Odds
A Life Reimagined
by Marie Cashion

This is the story of a life that veered off course—and found its way back to joy. The Sisters of Charity were far from charitable. Cruel, abusive, and at times violent, these nuns ruled their boarding school with harsh hands and cold hearts. Sent there just a few years after her father’s death, eight-year-old Marie and her two siblings endured a decade of loneliness and misery. Even after graduation, the pain of her childhood remained, and Marie, seeking a sense of purpose, made the nearly inexplicable decision to enter the convent, extending the very structure and discipline that had shaped her early years. But beneath the weight of her past lay a glimmer of hope—a world of freedom, travel, and love waiting to embrace her. To reach it, she would have to relinquish everything she had known and take a leap toward a new path. Against the Odds: A Life Reimagined is a deeply moving memoir about resilience, hope, and the transformative power of overcoming adversity. Marie’s journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit—an inspiring reminder that no matter how difficult the road, it’s never too late to choose a new direction. With humor, heart, and a fierce will to live fully, her story proves that even the smallest acts of change can make a world of difference.

Marie Cashion is a mother, grandmother, university professor, author, former nun, and the founder of Grandmothers Helping Grandmothers—an organization committed to supporting the education and well-being of children in Africa. For more than forty years, Marie has called Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, home, where she continues to work with compassion, curiosity, and commitment to community service.
