Seventeen Breaths of Life
by
Lesley Tannen
Seventeen breaths— lungs of the Earth heave again, life stirs Pause. Look at the natural world around you. Even in a busy urban setting, you can sit on a bench or lean against a tree and take in the world—even for just seventeen seconds. Seventeen Breaths of Life is a collection of poetry and art that pairs daily haiku with weekly images. These short, philosophical poems explore the beauty and wonder of the natural world. They chronicle the progression of time over the year through the lives of plants and animals native to British Columbia. The collection reaches out to poetry lovers as well as those interested in daily mindful meditation anchored in the life around them. In our hyper-active world, this thin volume helps ground the reader, regardless of age, for a few moments each day.
Lesley Tannen is a visual artist and avid reader of many genres, including poetry. Haiku has always interested her because of its ability to paint a complex view with few words. This book is an experiment in combining these two ways of capturing a moment. Lesley has always had an avid interest in the natural world, fed by a lifetime spent living in varied communities in B.C., doing many jobs, and meeting with successes and failures along the way. Lesley currently lives in Harrison Hot Springs.
