Two Grandmothers, One Path
Walking with Kokum - Walking with Nonna
by Marisa Agostini

“You were our song. You were our wish and our dream come true,” Kokum and Nonna each whispered to their granddaughters. Nonna and Kokum play an important role in shaping the lives of their granddaughters. With loving commitment, both grandmothers guide their granddaughters through their own people’s unique customs and traditions. Spiritually driven, the Indigenous people accentuate the importance of respecting Mother Earth. Their deep ties to the land are celebrated often. The Italian grandmother emphasizes their own unique ties to the land, their cultural celebrations, and their family values. Through a shared love for storytelling, each matriarch hopes to pass down their culture. We all come from a distinct culture—or a blend of cultures—which defines us. Taking a closer look at these two cultures highlights how similar we truly are!

Marisa Agostini is a retired educator and an Italian-born immigrant who has always related to and had an appreciation for the Indigenous People of Canada. As a teacher for both Catholic and public school boards in Ontario, she encouraged her students to pursue their education and never forget their rich cultural background. Her students included a number of Indigenous youths. Marisa lives in Toronto, where she enjoys promoting her culture and spending time with her seven grandchildren. Her first book, My Grandchildren and Me, was published in 2023 and explores her cultural journey and her loving relationship with her grandchildren.
