I Didn't Make Admiral
but what a life, no regrets!
by
George H. Jackson
Pour yourself a drink and walk the gangplank into the adventures of George Jackson, a retired naval officer and master mariner. Engrossing, irreverent, and full of life, I Didn’t Make Admiral is a collection of stories told with love, self-awareness, honesty, and a great sense of humour. George comes of age on the West Coast of Canada in the 1940s, finds his English rose while serving with the British Navy, introduces their children to the freedom of the ocean and islands, and does another 27,000 nautical miles under sail in his later years. With light, lively prose, this memoir gives you a taste of the navy and family life during the twentieth century set against the backdrop of privilege, poverty, and social position. Whether he was sailing over the waves in a ship or beneath them in a submarine, George’s lifelong affair with the sea and deep appreciation of family, friends and country come through on every page. George never did make Admiral—but along the journey he learned that was never really the point.
"Shit, some of these quirky stories kill me, like the amorous duchess in the Scottish castle with the largest pornographic library in Europe!" —Dr. Tom Weegar "I have had a wonderful journey into the past. While on transit or waiting for the bus I would lose track of time because I became totally absorbed in the stories." —Shirin Khazei "My wife asked me what I thought of your book, and I said 'it's full of love'." —Dr. Ernie Behm "A true story about a fascinating man’s life, his family and his friends. George's writing is full of love and humour as he tells stories of struggles and adventures. It keeps your attention!" —Maggie Levie "A thoroughly enjoyable memoir by a gifted raconteur whose lifelong love affair with the sea, fine sense of the droll, and deep appreciation of family come through on every page." —Georgina Montgomery
George Jackson published his first book at age 87, his second at age 89 and has another waiting in the wings which will be all about his Blue Water sailing adventures. George has been messing about in boats in one form or another since he was ten years old. His logbook records the many voyages but it’s his long view perspective that creates the quirky stories. George keeps watch on the sea from his home on Vancouver Island, British Columbia which he shares with his second wife. When asked what he did for a living he simply says, “I was a sailor”, and aye, he was that.
