Only the Unexpected
by
Jill Shakley
In England in the 1930s, Kenneth Verney is expelled from his public school for a prank-gone-wrong. When he’s forced to take a job with his uncle instead of joining the army, as he wishes, he expects boredom. Instead, he finds true delight in his work. Overseeing the physical training and fitness of wealthy businessmen teaches him both ingenuity and responsibility. While navigating a maze of unforeseen, sometimes comic, problems, Kenneth learns more about himself than he ever thought possible. Only the Unexpected is the latest offering from Jill Shakley, continuing a multi-faceted look at period London through a series of quirky, complex characters. Here, we explore coming of age in a time when life could be truly demanding. In helping other people meet their challenges, Kenneth ends up improving his own life—and dabbling in a bit of romance.
“Jill Shakley” is really Jill and James Shakley, a duo that has been married since 1969. They are the authors of Three on a Match, I Always Win, The Bearded Queen, and Not Full Circle. Their books take place in Depression-era England, and occasionally share their casts of characters. The Shakleys feel that life can most successfully be lived with a light touch. Jill has an MA in English from the University of Toronto and retired from the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children after forty years. After a lifetime of gardening, Jill certainly knows about digging holes, which Kenneth spends much of his time doing. James is an artist and historian who has done a wide variety of jobs, often two or more at the same time. Over the course of their life together, they have lived with more than two dozen different cats. The Shakleys live in Toronto, in the Upper Beaches, currently with three cats.
