Jay Loves Baseball
by Aly Aziz

Jay Scott loves everything about the game of baseball. He wants to be like his dad, a professional baseball player. When Jay grows up, he makes it to the pros and plays for the same team as his father did. Even though Jay has spent years doing the hard work necessary to prepare to be a pro, things don’t go smoothly. He is too focused on winning. Then Jay’s father reminds him that playing well means simply enjoying the game’s moments. At the core of all we do, having fun shouldn’t be an exception—especially for kids. We succeed when we let go of external expectations and simply enjoy what we do!

Aly Aziz is a practising Child Neurologist with insight into factors that promote optimal development of young minds. Over his years working with children and adolescents, he notes a worsening trend where children sacrifice those moments that foster development for routines expected of them. He believes this is contributing to the burgeoning mental health care crisis as children grow older. Thus, Aziz is a proponent of children and adolescents engaging in free play and emphasizes the value of intrinsic rewards compared to external ones. Aziz has always enjoyed writing. He wrote for his school paper as an undergrad and for the Science section in medical school. In addition, he has authored opinion pieces for local newspapers, written in magazines & academic journals. In the past year, he has re-ignited a passion for creative writing. Aziz played team sports growing up, including baseball. Now, Aziz loves watching sports, and is a huge fan of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. When done without external pressures, he believes team sports as one of the best activities children can do for their development. Aziz lives in a suburb outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, hiking, reading, writing, travelling, and listening to music.
