E is for Maggie
Loving a Daughter with Autism
by
Susan D. Dagenais
E is for Maggie is a memoir about love, adaptation, and the search for happiness. Susan bravely shares her inner thoughts and feelings, mistakes, and the difficult decisions she had to make to ensure her family was as safe and fulfilled as possible. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to raising children, and caring for her daughter with severe autism in the 1980s and 90s presented challenges that often felt isolating and insurmountable. Susan came to learn: “You have to keep knocking till you get the help you need.” Today, Maggie is a living testimony of love that never gave up.
"E is for Maggie is a beautifully-written memoir. From the first page it captures the reader and I simply could not put it down. Susan Dagenais is a gifted writer and her story-telling evokes the emotions of passion, perseverance and above all profound love! It is a 'must read'!" ―Donalda Dawn Dubé, author of From Coal Oil Lanterns to FaceTime: A Memoir and 70 Layers of Life: A Collection of Poems "In this memoir, Susan Dagenais has written a very personal and stirring account of her experiences as a mother of an autistic daughter. It is impressive in its clarity and simplicity. The book is wise in its insights into the essence of family struggles and family triumphs. With every chapter you are met with unexpected situations and queries. An excellent page-turner." ―Lorne Keon, Director of Education (retired)
Susan Dagenais is a lifelong learner. From the time she was eight years old, she would walk home from the library with her arms full of books, devouring as much knowledge as she could. She earned Bachelor's degrees in Arts and Education and taught French as a Second Language for 25 years, sharing her joie d’apprendre with thousands of students in Renfrew County schools. Susan loves reading and writing; several of her articles and interviews are printed in the Ecclesia newspaper. She loves waking up with the sun, walking in nature, and kayaking. Susan especially enjoys spending hectic but precious moments with her grandchildren. She is an active member of her church. E is for Maggie: Loving a Daughter with Autism is her first book.
