Smiling Depression
by J.J. Porteous

Life can be a wild, beautiful, gorgeous disaster. From love to heartache, even joy to sorrow. Life goes in a circle from birth to death. Life can lead us down a depressed path resulting in addictions and darkness. Losing loved ones reminds us how precious life can be. We share drinks, smiles, and laughs with friends. People come and go throughout our lives leaving lessons we either learn or live by. This book is exactly that. Life met head on. The poems show that you’re not alone in whatever you’re going through. Join me on my journey through life in Smiling Depression. Hopefully, through the journey of this book you’ll find ease in the path you are currently walking and have a better understanding of those misunderstood. Most of all, allow yourself to feel and heal your emotions with each poem.

I first started writing poetry as a way to deal with my depression. After journaling wasn’t working, I tried poetry as another method. I discovered poetry was a way to face my feelings and emotions head on in a more descriptive way. Poetry then turned into a hobby and something I became passionate about. After sharing some of my poems with others who were struggling, I realized that through my poetry I was able to help others, and show them they are not alone in their struggles. I leave myself feeling open and vulnerable with my poetry, exposing my issues with mental health, addictions, opinions, love, and loss. In doing so I hope that others see that it is ok to talk about their internal turmoil, and not remain a silent prisoner. I have had so much support in my life after opening up about my issues. I hope my words can be another avenue of support for those feeling lost. I have been blessed so much in life. I wanted to find a way to pay it forward. I feel this book does just that.
