Not Full Circle
by Jill Shakley

When Reg Raleigh is discharged from his senior banking position in London due to the Depression, he finds his life empty. On impulse, Reg buys a used bicycle and pedals his way into life as a small-town detective. During his bizarre adventures, he gets more involved in the lives of strangers, pubs, and cats than he ever thought possible. This unmoored gentleman even contrives the destruction of a woman’s marriage plans—but only because he hopes to marry her himself. Not Full Circle is the next offering from the Shakleys, continuing their multi-faceted look at period London through a series of quirky, complex characters. Here, we explore the second wind of life after retirement, when new chances, questions of one’s purpose and identity, and unexpected connections all tie together in a humorous historical adventure.

"Jill Shakley” is really Jill and James Shakley, a married duo and authors of Three on a Match, I Always Win, and The Bearded Queen, all of which take place in Depression-era England and occasionally share their casts of characters. Jill has an MA in English from the University of Toronto and retired from the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children after forty years. James is an artist and historian who has done a wide variety of jobs, often two or more at the same time. They have had twenty-odd cats, as many as four at a time—and some of them have been very odd indeed! The Shakleys live in Toronto, in the Upper Beaches, currently with three cats.
