The Other Side Of Autumn
Selected Poems 1969 - 2022
by David Phipps

Never again can joy be so free As in the youthful tide. No! Now that I’ve tasted, Have heard, do see, Autumn’s other side. The Other Side of Autumn is a collection of free verse and rhyming poetry that explores the fundamental paradoxes of human nature. Its subjects are varied, and David explores them with equal candor and joy: the Christian faith, the rapid change and brevity of life, the counterintuitive nature of success and fulfilment, and the fact that melancholy and sadness can often lead to renewed hope. Readers will be drawn into a world both familiar and seen anew. This collection appeals to new readers of poetry who want a breath of fresh air, as well as those who are ready to be captivated and inspired by new takes on old forms.

David began writing poetry while at Queen's University in 1969, where he studied English Lit and Comparative Religions. In 1971, unsure of what direction to pursue, he traveled around Europe and North America for the next few years; eventually settling down to a long career in the field of carpentry. Not wanting, however, to completely abandon deeper study, he received his Bachelor of Theology in 2008. Now in his seventies, he has collected a selection of his poems that he wrote across the decades. David lives in Vancouver, BC, with his wife Jennifer.
