The Day the Masks Went On
by
Kerron Forbes
and
Audrey Forbes
One morning in March 2020, Mom starts behaving very mysteriously: she is wearing a mask to go get groceries! What is going on here? Why would she put on a mask just to leave the house? The inquisitive young Detective Dillard is on the case! She interviews her family to find clues that will help her understand this strange new article of clothing and get to the bottom of the mystery that surrounds it. The Day the Masks Went On tells a funny, must-read story about the early days of a modern-day global pandemic, from a child’s perspective. As Dillard works to solve for unknowns, young readers will see themselves reflected back in her awe and uncertainty. In the end, discovering the meaning of the mask is not as important as learning that we can face difficult times and adapt to new situations by seeking to understand. The young detective was also reminded of the power of teamwork and a loving and supportive family.
"The Day the Masks went On is a fun, engaging and relatable tale that introduces us to kid Detective Dillard and her four-legged partner, Rufus. With so many questions about a mysterious illness, Detective Dillard takes on the case and unlocks the answers to a true-life mystery. Can’t wait to see them crack their next case!" —Wendy Reid
Kerron and Audrey Forbes enjoyed collaborating on this funding project because they both love to write and they both wanted to raise funds to support a local charity they belong to. Both have been writing for fun from a young age but this is their first book. It was inspired by their desire to raise funds for a local charity and by an equally strong desire to capture, through the eyes of a child, the global public health dilemma that began in March 2020. Audrey and Kerron, who are mother and daughter respectively, live in Ontario.
