Collecting Shells
by R. Lavender

Everyone’s heard the saying, “The world doesn’t revolve around you,” and while it's true in a sense, it can also make us feel unimportant, or like a burden. Poetry changes our relationship between the world and ourselves, recentering us and reminding us that every moment can be beautiful. Eating cereal really early in the morning is a poetic thing. Crying in your car on the way to work is a poetic thing. Poetry makes the world bearable. This free verse poetry collection is a simple walk on the beach, picking up shells every now and then, each one carrying its own memory and dream. Each poem explores the beauty and sadness of the world, and the small moments that bind us together. If you are lost in some way, whether you’re navigating childhood trauma or trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, poetry can show you a way forward. Pick up these poems and take them all home, or leave them on their sandy beds once you’ve explored them. There’s no right way to read a book of poetry... Just enjoy the cascading emotions that roll onto shore.

R. Lavender photo

R. Lavender enjoys creating visual art and photography, as well as reading and volunteering. Writing is one of their oldest hobbies, thanks to a wonderful mentor who took them in and taught them the ways of poetry. But it wasn’t until a bad day and an even worse night that Lavender turned that passion into a project, and created this book. Their inspiration comes mainly from their love for biology. Nature has always been an important and symbolic presence in their life, feeding both their creativity and curiosity. Lavender’s quiet dream is to live in a lighthouse, where the sea is misty and the sunsets are soft on the eyes. They will live there with their art supplies and porcelain tea set. Friends will come to visit, and they’ll talk as long as they please. But for now, there is always poetry to bring the dream to them.
