The Silent Voice of Grief
by P. R. Hernon

The Silent Voice of Grief is a collection of free verse poetry and prose that chronicles the spiritual journey of grief and sorrow after the death of a loved one. The poems were written during a two-year span after the death of the author’s son, as a way to turn grief and sorrow into acquiescence and loving remembrance. Nineteen years later, Hernon is finally ready to release this deeply personal work into the world. She hopes that other parents who have lost a child to death—from addiction or other causes—may find solace and understanding in the lines of this work. The depth of sadness that one feels after loss is not often understood by those who stand outside the tragedy, and there is comfort to be had in seeing those experiences reflected in the written word.

P. R. Hernon is the author of A Community of Old Bones (2016) and The Old Lady Who Wrote Stories For Her Son (2021). Her writing is incredibly personal, born of the heartbreak she experienced when her son died in 2002. She discovered that creation was a wondrous tool to help her walk the paths of grief and sorrow. She began to write both prose and poetry to faithfully chronicle her journey. Had she not been able to do so, she fears what would have been her fate. Others may have found better ways, but this has worked for her. It kept her sane and focused throughout the darkest days of her life. Hernon lives in Victoria, B.C., within a retirement community.
