Adventure Van and the Travelling Clan
by Lindsay Jay

What is “home” exactly? Is it just the place where you sleep? Where you keep your stuff? An apartment, a house, an igloo, or even somewhere out under the stars? Well, these are the sorts of questions that the members of one family start asking themselves when they wake up one morning to find that their house has vanished into thin air. Poof! Like magic. Luckily, they still have each other, and their family van, so they decide to go on an epic adventure to find a new home. This thoughtful and entertaining adventure story, told with fun rhymes and colorful illustrations, should help children (age 1-8) learn a bit about the world, and appreciate the people in their lives who can help them see the positives in life, even during hard times, with laughter and love.

Author Lindsay Jay studied literature in university, and has written poetry since adolescence, but it wasn’t until the stresses of COVID was paired with discovering mold in her family home, forcing her to make other living arrangements for her family, that she was inspired to write this particular, semi-autobiographical story. With four children, ages six and under, Lindsay and her husband lived in six different houses while renovations were being done to repair the mold damage to their home. Not surprisingly, she started imagining an alternative universe in which they could, as a family, simply walk away from the pandemic’s financial and emotional stresses—not to mention the hassle of online work and schooling—strap on backpacks, and travel around to all their favorite places. While this dream was obviously not feasible, she hopes that the fun, upbeat story it inspired will be enjoyed by readers and become a wonderful memento of this time for her own children. Lindsay currently lives in Toronto, Ontario, with her husband and their four children.
