Vivid Tales from a Life Well Lived
by Dave W Stutt

Stutt Stories: Vivid Tales from a Life Well Lived is a candid and riotous collection of memories, reflections, and conversations from a lifetime of logging, ranching, livestock-hauling, hunting, fishing, and living in the rural Canadian West. The stories and poems are written as they have been lived, and as they have been related in coffee shops, on horseback, and in pick-up trucks on country back roads, with colloquialism, common language, and gritty the humour the author is well known for. This collection will appeal to an adult audience interested in Canadian cultural history, as well as those who simply like a good story.

Dave W Stutt was born and raised in Powell River on a small acreage of self sustaining farming practices. He carved a life for himself out of the coastal logging industry, where he started young and at the bottom, learning all aspects and all positions along the way to eventually becoming company owner with a crew of up to 17 men. After a diverse career in coastal logging, he and wife Cindy sold the business and their property in 1991 and moved their 2 daughters to BC’s Southern Interior, where they formed 4 BAR S Ranch on 1,200 plus acres just north of Chu Chua. Stutt, who was “too young to retire and still half-ways ambitious” ran up to 200 head of mother cows, trained and raised draft horses, and won more than a few buckles in draft horse competitions. Stutt’s wife and daughters opened a custom meat cutting shop on the ranch where they continue to provide the valley with grass fed beef, pork, lamb, chicken, farm fresh eggs, and wool products. Dave and Cindy Stutt did more than just raise two incredible daughters and a diverse array of livestock, though. They also coached countless “students” on their back-to-roots lifestyle approach. It began with friends of their daughters but grew to include many others from various walks of life who couldn’t get enough of the real-life experience at 4 BAR S, where you could come for a coffee but end up staying the day helping with farm chores and being coached by the gruff but humorous Dave Stutt who always had a vivid tale to tell about days gone by and a life well lived.
