Karkulka Puppet Theatre presents: The Ice Queen
by
Dana Velan
and
Tom Velan
Karkulka Puppet Theatre has entertained young children with puppet shows for many years. And now, here is a book about this charming little theatre and one of the stories about two best friends and what happened to them one Christmas. The story is inspired by the “Snow Queen”, written by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Best friends Jake and Ella encounter the mean Ice Queen who puts a spell on Jake. A fox and a goofy reindeer named Cariboubou help along the way. This is a story about good and evil, loyalty and love, and a friendship so strong, that it can release the spell of the mean Ice Queen.
Dana and Tom Velan built the puppet theatre so they could entertain their children with puppet shows. Later, with help from some friends, the theatre group performed at schools, cultural centers and a local library. With Tom and Dana’s Czechoslovak background, there was a strong tradition in puppetry and fairy tales. The theatre is named after a fairy tale character Karkulka, who is Little Red Riding Hood. Dana is an artist, and she illustrated the book. Tom wrote the story inspired by the “Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen.
