The Magic Candle
or How We Got Home
by
Hallie Rive Appel
Charlotte and her sisters Emma and Andrea live in a cabin in a forest—but they can’t remember how they got there. When otherworldly characters show up—a talking wolf, royal guards with a glass slipper, woebegone dwarves—Charlotte suspects they’ve been transported to a land of fairy tales. The sisters enjoy helping people with their troubles, and they meet princesses with plenty of gusto, but the nagging sense that they belong elsewhere leads them to the infamous Fairy Queen. Just as the truth of their situation is revealed, the sisters fear they’ll never go home again.
Funny, clever, and charming, The Magic Candle is a re-examination of fairy tales in a modern era as navigated by three empowered young sisters.
Hallie Rive Appel lived in New Zealand as a child. She and her friends had unusual freedom to roam at will through the New Zealand bush, which may have helped inspire this book. Mother of three, grandmother of six and soon to be a great-grandmother, she now lives with her husband of nearly sixty years in Friday Harbor, Washington. The Magic Candle is her first book.
