The Feathered Bridge
by Anna Ottolino

Henry’s ninth birthday is over already, and he can’t help but miss all of the fun of his party. But as Henry grapples with his sadness, he notices something outside his window . . . a small bird flits in place on the ground. Something doesn’t seem right, so Henry goes to investigate. When he discovers the bird is struggling, he’s filled with an overwhelming desire to help. Join Henry as he helps a creature in need and watch how a single act of kindness can inspire a continuous cycle of kindness in others. The Feathered Bridge is a karmic, cyclical story about the importance of caring for others and how compassion can make us feel better, too. In it, children will see that loss is not the end of the journey, and that what we give to others will come back to us in time. The Feathered Bridge teaches children that all beings—humans, animals, the environment—are interconnected. We are all downriver from one another, and how we live and treat others matters.

"This beautifully written story shows how one small act of Loving-Kindness has a ripple effect, inspiring others to continue with good deeds. A wonderful tool to help children realize that we are all downriver from each other, and our actions matter." — Venerable Bhante Sujatha, The Loving Kindness Monk

Anna Ottolino is a continuous student of yoga and Buddhist teachings, in addition to having studied French language and literature at both the University of Western Ontario and the University of Nice. In 2010 she founded The Yoga Effect in Grayslake, Illinois where she lived for 25 years and raised her family. Anna now splits her time between Boulder Colorado and Grayslake. A believer in the innate goodness of people, The Feathered Bridge was borne of Anna’s desire to share this belief with children, nurturing and encouraging their desire to act in kindness and love toward others—people and animals alike. The story’s setting was inspired by the property Anna’s in-laws lived on, filled with mulberry trees and wildlife. This story is in honor of her niece and mother-in-law. Anna exercises her passion to help others connect in love and heal through her writing, teachings, and practices. Her latest venture of hosting Yoga, Hiking, and Meditation Retreats, marries Anna’s thirst for adventure with her desire to promote kindness.
