Soul Healing
Poetry by a Nurse
by M Karen Benwell

Wouldn’t you like to know what a nurse thinks about death, grief, and loss? Wouldn’t you like to know how a nurse finds inspiration while dealing with, for instance, the death of a loved one by suicide? Poetry and nursing are not two words that one usually thinks of together. But that’s exactly what makes this collection of poems as unique as it is strong. Born of her experiences living and working in Canada’s remote northern communities, these nineteen poignant and beautiful poems evoke hope, while dealing with grief.

This book will be of interest to all readers of poetry, particularly those who are dealing with any kind of “soul pain.” It will also be a great book for nurses, other health care providers, and anyone dealing with people on a daily basis wanting to process their own life issues. Settle in, overcome tragedy, and experience your own soul healing.

Karen Benwell has been a nurse for over forty years, working in a men’s federal prison and in Canada’s north. Her years of dealing with grief and loss, including the impact that residential schools have on people’s lives—mentally, physically, and spiritually—and her own dark nights, led her on a long journey of many moves and religions.

As she began to deal with her own issues, Karen realized she could look at the world with compassion. She had been given a gift of hope and healing words to share that she now uses to inspire people seeking relief, and even healing, from life’s soul pain, encouraging them to seek a higher power.

Her poem “My Journey to the Butterfly” was published by Polar Expressions Publishing.

Karen lives in High Level, Alberta, with her husband of forty-five years and their many rescue cats and dogs.
