When I Am Quiet
by Teresa Monaghan

For a moment... Wherever you are, just breathe... With each slow breath, allow yourself to settle, to relax, to just be who you are in this moment. Find the quietness, the calm that is here, underneath it all. You can even let your eyes gently close... Now open your eyes and savor the world around you. Can you notice the simple beauty? What can you see? What can you hear? What do you feel when you are quiet?   In our modern culture of stimulation and distraction, levels of anxiety and sensory disorders are rising amongst today's youth. When I Am Quiet explores themes of mindfulness and imagination, teaching children the skill of finding peaceful moments amid the busyness of their inner and outer lives. This can help sooth their feelings of stress and support them in the face of life’s many challenges. At the same time, present moment awareness can nurture many positive forms of development including focus, flow, emotional regulation, and relating positively to self, others, and the environment.   When I am Quiet offers children a gateway to discover the splendor of their world, the joy of their imaginations, and the calm that is always there for us.
