Who Goes Canoeing With Their Mother-in-Law?
The Misguided Tales of an Avid Paddler
by
Kyle Penner
Swirling rapids and daring rescues. Forgotten maps and stolen canoes. Bigfoot encounters and yes, even canoeing with his mother-in-law. Gather round the campfire and let your imagination be captivated by these canoeing stories. Laugh at the things that went wrong. Live the suspense of each tale. Learn what (not) to do on your next paddling trip. Love both the adventures and the absurdities. Delight in Kyle Penner’s story-telling as he recounts 17 canoe trips from his home province of Manitoba. Marvel at the artwork of his beloved mother-in-law, Patti Enns, as she brings each story to life with her meticulous maps. And be inspired to pack your bags, load up your canoe, and call your friends (or mother-in-law) to go paddling.
“…all the charm and adventure of a week long trek into the Canadian woods. Kyle Penner is the best of travelling companions: relaxed, keen — and amusing.” – Roy MacGregor, author of Canoe Country: The Making of Canada "The stories have a familiar feel that every outdoors enthusiast can relate to but with a twist that kept me wanting to read more! What a great read!" – Mike Ranta, author, canoeist "Just getting into a canoe can be an adventure in itself, but paddling off into the wilderness with your mother-in-law pretty much ups that likelihood to a certainty. I hope you enjoy reading Kyle's canoeing tales as much as I did!" – Dana Starkell, Paddle to the Amazon "Kyle Penner’s stories read like a downhill portage after the peak of blackfly season. They’re a joy to devour, and exhilarating enough to want to pore over again and again." – Kevin Callan (a.k.a. The Happy Camper), author of Once Around Algonquin: An Epic Canoe Journey
KYLE PENNER, the author, is the son-in-law to the illustrator, Patti Enns. He loves to tell canoeing stories almost as much as he actually loves canoeing. As a child, he started solo-paddling around Star Lake at the family cottage, but has since expanded his paddling destinations. His favourite places to canoe are the Whiteshell Provincial Park and the Kasakeemeemisikak Islands, and his favourite people to paddle with are his wife, Ashley, and his kids, Arianna, Zachary, and Milo. He currently lives in Steinbach, Manitoba, and wishes his ancestors hadn’t turned the original creek that ran through town into a drainage ditch. PATTI ENNS, the illustrator, is the mother-in law to the author, Kyle Penner. Patti is a retired school teacher who discovered her love of drawing when she unexpectedly found herself having to teach an art class. When not keeping up with the kids and grandkids, she finds time every day to draw parts of her ordinary life. And whenever she goes somewhere, these drawings include a detailed map! She currently lives in Rennie, Manitoba, just outside the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
