It is an axiom that the greater the love shared, the greater the sorrow on parting this life. Sipping Tea is a collection of poems written over the swirling of many years, at the centre of which lies the death of the poet’s beloved wife, which occurred in 2015. It is a love story—written as an homage to Diana, and as an inquiry into Saxby’s deep and desperate grief in the wake of her passing. If we do not know the pain of it already, the fear of losing the person we’ve lovingly lived our life alongside of can prove a source of terror. In this often-tragic but always grateful collection, we meet a man in the midst of this anguish, and accompany him as he falls into the depths of despair and learns, with difficulty, to live—and love—again.

Saxby has written and collected his poems with purpose: “The last night Diana spent at home, the fatigue of fighting the lung cancer began to overwhelm her determination to stay and love me forever. She cried out, ‘I’m not long for this world!’ We embraced. I told her our love would live forever. This book helps me fulfill that promise.” Saxby lives alone, though with Diana’s spirit, on the Goulais River in Ontario, just twenty miles north of Sault Ste. Marie. Though grieving, he looks back happily on a life well lived. After all, he says, “love and sorrow are symbiotic handmaidens. We should shy away from neither.”
