The Art of Becoming An Artist
by Darylynn Starr Rank

Being an artist can be the most enchanting life imaginable – and the most tormenting. Finding your way to your own creative universe is an extraordinary and infinitely surprising journey. Still, every artist falters at some point. Call it what you will: blocks, obstacles, hitting the wall, tossing your painting into the ocean, or shredding your manuscript – we have all stumbled, we have all shut down. Based on the concept that creativity is unique to each individual, The Art of Becoming an Artist is designed to help artists discover the myriad, astonishing factors – social, educational, political, psychological, and personal history – that both enhance and interfere with our creativity. There is no “right” way to get to one’s art. There is only YOUR way. Finding that way is every artist’s goal. Using safe, gentle, revealing techniques to aid readers’ self-examination, The Art of Becoming an Artist produces epiphany after epiphany as it guides artists into shedding the restraints that are shutting them down. Artists of any stripe will find hope, excitement, and joy in this compassionate but thrilling process.

Darylynn Starr Rank (most people call her Dari) is a writer, a therapist, and a creativity consultant. In addition to The Art of Becoming an Artist, she has written newspaper columns, short stories, novels, screenplays, poetry, and articles, both published and unpublished, and journals, journals, journals. In her clinical practice she works with a wonderful array of creative clients: artistic beings of many sorts. Artists are her specialty. As a creativity consultant, she gives a massive number of talks, lectures, seminars, workshops, courses, professional development training, private classes, weekend intensives, and online tutorials, all dedicated to the pursuit of our creative process. She presents her programs in universities, colleges, non-profit organizations, businesses, (including one of the largest computer game designers in the world), hospitals, social service associations, community centers, her living room, on the shore of one of the loveliest lakes in British Columbia, at a tropical retreat in the Florida Keys – any kind of venue you can imagine. The combination of being a writer and a therapist, and of having once been seriously screwed up, is what led to the unique vision she has developed for her workshops and courses…this vision has now been happily distilled into The Art of Becoming An Artist.
