After Yesterday
by A. Art deJong

The story of a family, already faced with disappointment, hardship, poverty and loss, who find that they have the devastation of child abuse added to their challenges. Interconnected with other families in their rural setting, they find that in a sea of turmoil there is an island of hope, if only they can accept the lifeline that reaches them from those who truly love and care for them. A story of hope, redemption and family renewal.

Born in the Netherlands in 1949, the author arrived in Canada at the age of 3, a middle child of six. Within a few short years the family had grown to 9 children. The deJong family lived in rural Western Canada with a hope of farming prosperity that never materialized. They lived in poverty throughout the author’s childhood years and all of the children, including the author, left the farm at an early age to live in one of several cities, sure that prosperity would never be found on the parent’s farm. The author worked at numerous jobs throughout his adult life and saw, first hand the terrible things that people did to one another in a cold, sinful world. This story, his first work of fiction, was a decade-long effort to express the possibility of hope and redemption for those who were brave enough to try.
