Through the Eyes of a Belfast Child
Life. Personal Reflections. Poems.
by Greg McVicker

Life is a journey. Often times and without choice, our actions and interactions within the environments in which we grow, live, work, and play, define our worldviews and shape who we are. Anyone who has faced traumatic events may look for an outlet to share their experiences in the hopes they are not alone in their struggles. In hindsight, however, the realization is that we are all human, and each and every one of us has a unique story to tell.

“This is totally fantastic! Even the wee poems were perfect and such a pleasure to read. This is something I’d read again and again. Above all, I’m sure your mammy is looking down on you with such pride and love. I have never read such beautiful words written by anyone to describe their mum as you have. The feelings are there, but putting them into words is something else. I actually filled up reading some parts, a wee mixture of smiles and tears. I’m sure that anyone else who will read this will react exactly the same. Not only have you put a lot of hard work and time into this, you’ve also written this with your heart.”

Greg McVicker received his Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba in 2008. He has consulted, wrote scripts, developed, as well as produced and co-produced both Pandemic and HIV awareness videos for the sixty-three First Nation communities in Manitoba. He then followed this up by scripting, developing, and producing his own series of animated videos to create and promote additional awareness on HIV featuring the world’s greatest advocates as his primary characters in the fight against this disease. They are available online: friggermortis YouTube. Greg resides in Winnipeg, Canada with his two children, Caitlin and Ciarán. Through the Eyes of a Belfast Child is his first book. He has written a series of children’s books called, The Adventures of Silly Billy. These are based on his real life experiences while growing up in Belfast, and learning from his mistakes. He hopes to work with an illustrator and have these published soon. Greg aspires to expand his efforts to address HIV on a global level by ensuring equitable access to antiretroviral medications for those nations where this preventable disease is most prevalent. He likens this personal mission to the inspirational efforts U2’s Bono has done through (RED).
