The Princess Doll's Scrapbook
Her Families' Emigration/Immigration Story
by
Elaine Melby Ayre
“...imparts evanescent visions of oceans crossed and lands traversed from the late 1800s and grounds the reader to the present time. Beginning in Norway and culminating in Canada, a lovingly crafted outline of the author’s rich family history...” “...more than the record of an heirloom or a family tree;...the reconstruction of the story of a family, rooted and established in love, sharing an unshakeable faith, and reaping the blessing of a clan that has spanned centuries. ...a compelling work— because of the universal appeal of seeking out one’s family history, and the sense of timeless belonging revealed throughout... a haunting, yet comforting story that shares the same interesting elements of famous stories...that explore the details of pioneer living...” “...I...compliment you on your thorough, thoughtful research and your writing style. This book is a real treasure! It will appeal to a variety of readers:...young and old...anyone interested in Norwegian immigrant stories or who want to know something about researching family history and learn...what drew relatives to Canada a century ago...and about the adventure of doing research about things of value to us.”
As the oldest daughter of the oldest daughter of one of the early homesteading families from Souris Valley RM No. 7 in southeastern Saskatchewan, Elaine was always interested in the history of her immigrant grandparents but never imagined she would write about it. Being gifted with her grandmother’s old and damaged porcelain doll inspired a lifelong search for answers about the doll and its place in the family. Finally when her granddaughter was born she determined to write a story about the doll. Writing courses taken through the Institute for Children’s Literature prepared her for the task. The Doll’s Scrapbook was started as a non-fiction book to make use of the quantity of research material she had accumulated. A retired Home Economics teacher, Elaine still works as a part-time cook at a local senior’s lodge, volunteers as a board member of the local Adult Learning Society, likes reading, gardening, and crafts, though crafts and sewing projects have taken a back seat since she started writing. Elaine and her husband have three grown sons and two grandchildren and enjoy country life on their central Alberta acreage with a few of their remaining Canadian Horses, and their dog, Molly.
