As the oldest daughter of the oldest daughter of one of the early homesteading families from Souris Valley RM No. 7 in southeastern Saskatchewan, Elaine was always interested in the history of her immigrant grandparents but never imagined she would write about it. Being gifted with her grandmother’s old and damaged porcelain doll inspired a lifelong search for answers about the doll and its place in the family. Finally when her granddaughter was born she determined to write a story about the doll. Writing courses taken through the Institute for Children’s Literature prepared her for the task. The Doll’s Scrapbook was started as a non-fiction book to make use of the quantity of research material she had accumulated. A retired Home Economics teacher, Elaine still works as a part-time cook at a local senior’s lodge, volunteers as a board member of the local Adult Learning Society, likes reading, gardening, and crafts, though crafts and sewing projects have taken a back seat since she started writing. Elaine and her husband have three grown sons and two grandchildren and enjoy country life on their central Alberta acreage with a few of their remaining Canadian Horses, and their dog, Molly.
